 |
| عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ {١} |
1. HE FROWNED AND turned away, |
| أَنْ جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ {٢} |
2. Because a blind man came to him. |
| وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ {٣} |
3. What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, |
| أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنْفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ {٤} |
4. Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? |
| أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ {٥} |
5. As for him who is not in want of any thing, |
| فَأَنْتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ {٦} |
6. You pay full attention, |
| وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ {٧} |
7. Though it is not your concern if he should not grow (in fulness). |
| وَأَمَّا مَنْ جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ {٨} |
8. As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), |
| وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ {٩} |
9. And is also fearful (of God), |
| فَأَنْتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ {١٠} |
10. You neglect. |
| كَلَّا إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ {١١} |
11. Assuredly this is a reminder |
| فَمَنْ شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ {١٢} |
12. For any one who desires to bear it in mind, |
| فِي صُحُفٍ مُكَرَّمَةٍ {١٣} |
13. (Contained) in honoured pages, |
| مَرْفُوعَةٍ مُطَهَّرَةٍ {١٤} |
14. Exalted and holy, |
| بِأَيْدِي سَفَرَةٍ {١٥} |
15. In the hands of scribes |
| كِرَامٍ بَرَرَةٍ {١٦} |
16. Noble and pious. |
| قُتِلَ الْإِنْسَانُ مَا أَكْفَرَهُ {١٧} |
17. Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! |
| مِنْ أَيِّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقَهُ {١٨} |
18. Of what substance God created him? |
| مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُ فَقَدَّرَهُ {١٩} |
19. From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, |
| ثُمَّ السَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُ {٢٠} |
20. Then made his passage easy (at birth); |
| ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُ فَأَقْبَرَهُ {٢١} |
21. He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. |
| ثُمَّ إِذَا شَاءَ أَنْشَرَهُ {٢٢} |
22. Then He will raise him up again when He please. |
| كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَا أَمَرَهُ {٢٣} |
23. But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. |
| فَلْيَنْظُرِ الْإِنْسَانُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِ {٢٤} |
24. Let man therefore consider (the sources of) his food. |
| أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا الْمَاءَ صَبًّا {٢٥} |
25. We poured down rain abundantly, |
| ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا الْأَرْضَ شَقًّا {٢٦} |
26. Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) |
| فَأَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا {٢٧} |
27. And We made corn grow, |
| وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا {٢٨} |
28. And grapes and herbage, |
| وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا {٢٩} |
29. Olives and dates, |
| وَحَدَائِقَ غُلْبًا {٣٠} |
30. Orchards thick with trees, |
| وَفَاكِهَةً وَأَبًّا {٣١} |
31. And fruits and fodder: |
| مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ {٣٢} |
32. A provision for you and your cattle. |
| فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الصَّاخَّةُ {٣٣} |
33. But when the great calamity comes |
| يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ {٣٤} |
34. Man will fly from his brother, |
| وَأُمِّهِ وَأَبِيهِ {٣٥} |
35. Mother and father, |
| وَصَاحِبَتِهِ وَبَنِيهِ {٣٦} |
36. As well as his wife and children. |
| لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ {٣٧} |
37. Each man will have enough cares that day. |
| وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُسْفِرَةٌ {٣٨} |
38. Many faces will that day be bright, |
| ضَاحِكَةٌ مُسْتَبْشِرَةٌ {٣٩} |
39. Laughing and full of joy, |
| وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ {٤٠} |
40. And many will be dust-begrimed, |
| تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ {٤١} |
41. Covered with the blackness (of shame): |
| أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ {٤٢} |
42. They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. |
